The Best 5 Tamil Historical Novels Should Everyone Read
#1 Kalki Krishnamurthy's Ponniyin Selvan
By now, I've read a lot of historical fiction. However, I
believe Ponniyin Selvan is the greatest, and it truly deserves to be ranked #1
among the top ten Tamil historical novels. Author Kalki Krishnamurthy wrote
this magnum opus novel, and it is truly a masterpiece by author Kalki
Krishnamurthy. Son of Ponni refers to Raja Raja Chola (Arulmozhivarman) the
Great, and Ponni refers to the river Kaveri. It's a 2400-page mega historical
tale that ran for 5 years in Kalki magazine as a mega serial. Everyone who read
this weekly magazine between 1950 and 1955 was astonished by the finale and
asked the author why he closed the store so quickly. That alone determined the
success of this historical thriller when it was first published as a full book
in five volumes and continues to this day. Maniam's original paintings were
recently reproduced in the popular monthly magazine Ananda Vikatan.
It takes you from the beginning to the end of the Chola
dynasty, visualizing all of the historical characters such as Raja Raja Chola,
Vanthiyathevan, Kunthavai Piratti, Azhvaarkadiyan, Sundara Chola, Aditya
Karikala, Nandini Devi, Periya Pazhuvettarayar, Chinna Pazhuvettarayar,
Mathuranthaka Chola a.k.
#2 Kalki Krishnamurthy's Sivagamiyin Sabatham
The Pallava dynasty, its original rulers, and the fictional
figure Sivagami are all included in this work. I'll write a separate review of
this book in a separate article.
#3 Akilan's Vengaiyin Mainthan
This is one of India's award-winning novels. The author,
Akilan, received the Sakitya Academy Award. The plot centres around Rajendra
Chola, Raja Raja Chola's son, and his reign. I'll write a separate review of
this book in a separate article.
#4 Balakumaran's Udayar
The novel's plot centers around Raja Raja Chola's
construction of the Big Temple-Brahadeeswarar in Tanjore, as well as the
dominating power of Raja Raja Chola and his son Rajendra Chola. The entire
temple was constructed of the hardest granite stones, proving that the history
of Raja Raja Chola is worthy of recognition to the entire world even after 1000
years.
#5 Kalki Krishnamurthy's Parthibhan Kanavu
This is author Kalki Krishnamurthy's first historical book,
which was published in his own weekly magazine Kalki from 1941 until 1943. The
central plot centers around Ruler Parthibhan's dream, which is realized by
Pallava king Mamalla Narasimhavarman.
